Andrew Remillard, (born March 13, 1962) is an American pianist with a wide range of knowledge and experience both within and outside the music world. While he gave many recitals throughout his life, it wasn’t until his retirement in the 2010’s that he turned to the recording studio. He has spent the years since recording over 250 solo piano works, including many world premieres. He has also followed his passion for Christian hymnody and has recorded over 6500 different hymns.
Remillard was born in the small college town of Sterling, Kansas to Donald and Beverly Remillard as his father was completing his BA degree. As a young pastor often does, this young family moved frequently until finally settling down in another very small town, Bad Axe, Michigan. It was here that he had his first piano lessons with Velma Snodden (nee Black), literally the little old lady who lived down the street. He continued his studies until graduating from high school. He next enrolled at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois where he studied with William Phemister and Michael Fritsch. And most importantly met his now wife of over 40 years, Diane (Southworth) who was also a student at the Conservatory. A couple of years later he began his studies with Mary Sauer at DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois where he received his MM in piano performance.
Understanding the limitations of earning a living and supporting his now growing family in the music world, Remillard chose to learn the piano technician trade. He greatly excelled at this, finding more work than he could possibly handle himself which led to the expansion of his business into one of the larger piano rebuilding shops in the Chicago area. He continued to teach and perform throughout this time.
In the mid-2010’s he closed his business, and while retaining some of his clientele, he dove into the recording work which would consume the rest of his life. He converted his old workshop behind his home into a recording studio and set about to learn another trade. In time, he started posting a few hymns and Bach’s Two-Part Inventions, just to test out the process. He has continued to record large amounts of Bach’s music, along with Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Rachmaninov, Alkan, Mendelssohn, and many others. He also regularly recorded works from living composers including works by Ruth Coberly, Laura JH Ball, Michael Canales, and Dubiell De Zarraga Lago to name a few.
While the complete list of Remillard’s recordings is too large to include here, the complete library can be found listed on this website. Some notable parts of this library are the following:
