The Heart of a Woman: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price (Music in American Life)

Florence Price was the first African American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer from the first half of the 20th century. I recently discovered her music. Her orchestration is very American in style and writes in a very tonal style with an interesting overlay of jazz elements. If you have never heard her music you have no idea what you are missing!

Johannes Brahms: A Biography

One of the best biographies of Brahms I have ever read. You get a good sense of his youth and how it impacted his life. The author does a great job of balancing personal and social elements with an examination of Brahms’ music.

Beethoven: The Music and the Life

Alkan: The Man / The Music

When I was a student I would hear the name Alkan from time to time, but never his music or any information about his life. Since then a lot of his music has become available in score and recordings. (A famous pianist has recorded his “Grand Etudes.”) This is the only book I have found which looks at the limited information we have about the man’s life and a cursory look at his major works.

Mendelssohn: A Life in Music

Nadia Boulanger: Thoughts on Music

If you want to understand Western music of the first 50 – 75 years of the 20th century you have to get to know Nadia Boulanger. She was an instructor at the Paris Conservatory and lists among her students such varied 20th century luminaries Daniel Barenboim, Idil Biret, Elliott Carter, Aaron Copland, David Diamond, John E Gardiner, Philip Glass, Roy Harris, Dinu Lipatti, Darius Milhaud, and many more.

Franz Liszt: The Virtuoso Years, 1811–1847

The seminal Alan Walker set on Franz Liszt is the standard by which all others are measured. If it is important and known it is included in these books.

Albert Switzer was a man of many talents; a missionary doctor in Africa, a world class organist, and a Bach scholar.
